Bio
Sam Jones has been painting plein air watercolor landscapes for over twenty five years. Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, he grew up in a household of artists where he was inspired and encouraged to paint at an early age. He has been a resident of Flagstaff, Arizona for fifteen years and he is best known for his watercolors of the Grand Canyon where he has worked as a river guide for many years.
Whether he is pulling his painting supplies out of an ammo can on a river trip or out of a backpack on a hike, Sam Jones loves how easily he can set up with his watercolors and begin to paint. The simple effectiveness of being able to quickly implement a vision using a few good brushes, water and some paint and paper continues to inspire him. He sometimes uses the watercolors done in the field to paint larger watercolors and oil paintings back home in the studio. However, he still finds the process of painting outdoors typically more fruitful. He says that even though painting in the outdoors often feels insurmountable, it almost always creates more spontaneous and fresh results than occur in the studio.
Sam Jones has shown his work at David Erickson Fine Art Gallery and F. Weixler Gallery in Salt Lake City. He had a solo show at the Coconino Community College in Flagstaff in 2009. Currently his work is displayed at West of the Moon Gallery in Flagstaff, Arizona.
